Cyberbullying Awareness

You are stupid. Fat. Worthless. Unloved. How many other hateful words have been and are being hurled at people? How far can a person go to hurt another? Bullying has always been a problem in societies. However, bullying is evolving due to the development of technology and thus communication. Text messages, websites, chat rooms, social networking sites; modern day bullies are using these innovations as tools to hurt others in a way that seems easy to commit and easy to avoid.

Collins the Dictionary: The Bully That Lives At Home

collinsthedictionary:

Everyday in one way or another, I see people abusing the internet for the misfortune of others. At the time, I wouldn’t have classed it as bullying as in my own way I would shrug it off quite easily. But not everyone is the same and neither are the situations that we can experience. I used to feel…

Raise your hopeful voice.: Light vs. Darkness

Tumblr can be really beautiful, but people can be awful. It truly, deeply hurts me to see people receiving messages saying “Go cut yourself” or “Go kill yourself” or “You should go die.” This isn’t a joke. Destructive self-esteem and self-worth is real. People struggle with depression and…

You got it, Melanie! Click on Melanie’s message above to sign the petition. I did.
From personal experience (which itself was just a mild case), cyber bullying sucks. I went onto a discussion board and asked a question, and got attacked on everything. These people (ADULTS! Not even teenagers! Adults who have children of their own!) told me things like because of the age difference between me and my boyfriend the only reason he could possibly be interested in me was for sex, and that I was immature and certifiably crazy for being an adult and loving Disney.
As much as you tell yourself that people like this and their oppinions don’t matter, it still really hurts to read things like that. I can’t even begin to imagine what it’s like for people who get such horrible things said to them that they feel that the only way out for them is suicide. Please, please, please, if you or anyone you know is going through something like this, be there for them! And everyone please spread pettitions like this and the following phone #s around!

Should Cyberbullying Be a Crime?

haveyoumetjosh:

Schools throughout New York are preparing to put a new curriculum in place that will teach students civility and tolerance, to comply with new legislation intended to cut down on bullying.

The 2010 legislation, called the Dignity for All Students Act, goes into effect July 1. It will require school districts to report instances of bullying to the state Education Department, and also mandates that schools adopt programs to counter bullying.
